At Upland, music encourages students to think creatively, constantly evaluate, experiment, and listen critically.

The Focus of Music in the Lower School

Have fun while learning the fundamentals:
  • Sing
  • Dance
  • Play instruments
  • Develop listening skills
All while learning:
  • Musical terminology
  • Melodic and rhythmic reading/notation
  • Improvisation
  • Composition
  • World music
  • How music is connected to all other subjects.

Opportunities to Grow as Musicians In Upper School

Upper School students are given even more opportunities to grow as musicians and performers. General music class allows students to:
  • Explore various composition techniques, both on instruments and using composition computer software.
  • Learn music history from the Medieval time period to the present
  • Experience a variety of genres and styles of music through listening and analysis activities.
  • Try out for Vocal Ensemble or join Chorus for even more performance experience.

Annual Performances

Annual performances that build students’ confidence and encourage them to step outside of their own comfort zone include:
  • Winter Sing
  • Grandparent’s Day
  • Spring Sing
