Upland Auction ’12: The Black and White Ball
Friday,
March 30, 2012

Mark your calendars, because the Upland auction is the biggest event of the year, and you do NOT want to miss this! Mix and mingle with friends and family as you browse the many wonderful items up for auction, such as vacation homes, wine collections, unique experiences, artwork, signed sports memorabilia and gourmet meals. The list goes on and on! And let's not forget those class baskets. They are fantastic this year and are sure to be a hit! This will be a fun-filled, fast-paced evening with some friendly competition thrown in. Get ready to raise those paddles high and often in support of our school.

The success of this event is only possible with your help. We depend on the generosity of families, friends, and businesses to donate goods and services for the auction, so please consider giving. Proceeds from the evening will provide our school with programs, facilities and equipment needed to support quality education.

The Black & White Ball will be held in the Gold Ballroom at the Mendenhall Inn. The cocktail party and a silent auction begin at 6:30, and dinner and the live auction begin at 7:30.

Tickets are $85 per person, which include cocktail hour, seated dinner, music and dancing. Invitations will be mailed soon, so be on the lookout for yours!

DragonFly Learning Offers Webinars to Parents

So what is a Webinar, you ask? A webinar is an online seminar that you “attend” on your computer. Webinars are offered in real-time (that is, the presenter(s) are speaking at the same time that you are hearing their voices, and in some cases, seeing them). Most webinars are interactive; participants can type in questions, or answer polls. If you are unable to be online at the time of the webinar, you can often view an archived version (which won’t be interactive). DragonFly Learning, the subscription to which has been so generously given to the Upland parent community, is presenting two webinars in February that might be of interest. The first is for parents of students aged 13 - 18. Airing on Monday Feb. 6 from 8 - 9:00 pm, this webinar is titled, “Additives, Preservatives and Flavorings: Defining Nutrition in a World of Chemicals.” Further information can be found here. The other webinar is geared toward parents of students aged 5 - 12. “Science-Based Strength and Endurance: Gaining the Competitive Edge on Youth Fitness” will air on Feb. 7 from 8 - 9:00 pm. Details are available here.

When Frederick Fleet spots the iceberg, all the officers are called upon to carry out the most dreaded command Capt. Smith ever had to issue: "Get the lifeboats ready!" Come aboard as the Titanic sets sail from the Barn at 1:30 pm, and again at 6:30 pm.

Grades 4 and 5 Valentine’s Tea on Feb. 10

It’s time for another of Upland’s traditions! The 4th and 5th grade Valentine’s Tea will be held in the Library on Friday, Feb. 10, from 9:30 - 10:30 am. This is a special occasion; formal invitations are sent to faculty members offering “lively conversation and refreshments.” The students wear “special dress” on the day of the Tea, and when their guests arrive, they escort them to the buffet table. When some treats have been chosen from the variety of delicacies available, the students sit with the faculty and are responsible for chatting with them as they eat. It’s a nice way to learn about and practice good manners, and to become more comfortable conversing with people they may only know slightly - a skill that will serve them well all their lives.
