Dear Lower School Parents,

Students in Lower School entering grades 1 through 5 are asked to read for enjoyment throughout the summer.  We encourage students to spend time reading every day.  Research has proven that children who read become better readers and writers.  It is also very beneficial if you read aloud to your children.

Enclosed is a list of suggested titles and authors which are age appropriate.  Please keep in mind that children in any grade may be on a different reading level than their grade level.  An easy test to determine the appropriateness of a book for your child is to have him/her read one page aloud.  If your child misses five or more words, the book is too hard.  Your child will not benefit from reading a book that is too challenging, as it will only frustrate and turn him/her off to reading.  Also remember that it is essential for a child to not only be able to decode words, but to also comprehend the story.

On some grade reading lists the teachers have listed books that should not be read over the summer because they may be read during the school year.  This advice is important to follow.  If a novel is read in advance, your child may be bored and might also not be able to participate in many class discussions (such as prediction activities) when the class reads it as part of a whole classroom unit.

When you are selecting books, librarians and bookstore salespersons are very helpful with suggestions.  You can also look at the back of the book, as easy readers and chapter books will often have the grade level indicated.  We have given the Chester County Book Co., Kennett and Hockessin Libraries, Borders, Toys & Tales, and Barnes & Noble bookstores copies of our reading lists.

Have a pleasant summer and happy reading!

Sincerely,
Mary C. Ledger
