Upland Country Day School - Physical Education
Spring 2009
Athletic Office: 610-444-8120 (direct line); 610-444-1624 (athletics hotline)
Lower School Physical Education
Lower School students will change to the spring schedule beginning Monday March 30, 2009. The schedule will be the same as it was in the fall. Students are required to wear sneakers to all P.E. classes. The schedule will be as follows:
Schedule
Pre Kindergarten on Monday and Wednesday
Kindergarten on Tuesday and Thursday
Grade 1 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
Grade 2 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
Grade 3 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
Grade 4 & 5 on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday
Equipment
Fourth and Fifth grade boys and girls will need lacrosse equipment by Tuesday Monday 30, 2009(after Spring Break). Girls in grades four and five will need sneakers (cleats are optional), a mouth guard, and a girl's lacrosse stick. Please be aware that there is a difference between girls and boy's lacrosse sticks. The boys' sticks have a much deeper pocket than the girls'. The stick should be cut to the length of the girl's arm (it can be a little longer if you want to get a few season's use). To measure, simply have your daughter hold the stick in her hand just below her head and measure to the armpit. This will enable her to perform the throwing motion correctly. It is mandatory that girls wear protective eyewear. Boys in grades four and five will need sneakers (cleats optional), a lacrosse stick (a mesh pocket is recommended for beginners), lacrosse gloves, arm pads, a helmet, shoulder pads and a mouth guard. Sticks can be cut down to make them easier to handle but cannot be any shorter than 40 inches from the top of the head to the bottom of the shaft. In order to make our teams look more uniform, we ask anyone who is buying a new helmet to buy a black one. It is all right to use another color if you already have a helmet. We recommend "Cascade" brand helmets. It is the parents' responsibility to maintain the helmet (check for loose screws and worn padding, etc.) throughout the season. Mouth guards may be purchased in the bookstore for $2.00.
The above-mentioned equipment can be found at most local sporting goods stores. Lacrosse International in Downingtown and Kelly's Sports in West Chester offer 10% discounts on sports equipment to Upland families. The Sports Authority in Wilmington (across from Concord Mall) also carries lacrosse equipment.

Upper School Lacrosse Season
Athletic Office: 610-444-8120 (direct line); 610-444-1624 (athletics hotline)
Upper School Athletics is an integral part of the total education at Upland. It is very important for students to attend all practices and games. The parents or family doctor must send in a note if a child is too ill to participate. This should be given to the homeroom teacher for any student who will miss a practice or game. If for some reason a student cannot participate, she/he is asked to support the team by watching from the bench at both practices and games.
Practice
The spring lacrosse season will officially begin on Tuesday March 3, 2009. Practice times will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 2:50-4:15 pm and Friday from 1:50-2:50. The 8th and 9th grade boys who are going to Finland will have a few hockey practices during the first couple weeks of lacrosse and we will let them know when they will be.
Team Breakdown
The breakdown of the boys' lacrosse teams for this season, and the coaches of those teams, will be as follows:
- JV 2 (Mr. Edgar, Mr. Hayes, Mr. Robinson) Developmental squad of less experienced 6th and 7th
Boys. This group will concentrate on skill development with a limited number of games.
- JV 1 (Mr. Robinson, Mr. Hayes, Mr. Edgar) More experienced 7th through 9th grade boys. 6th graders
will be given consideration for this team and placed here if appropriate.
- Varsity (Mr. Schluter, Mr. Lee) More experienced 8th and 9th grade boys.
The breakdown of the girls' lacrosse teams for this season, and the coaches of those teams, will be as follows:
- JV 1 (Miss. Conner, Mrs. Yeatman, Mrs. Coen…. This team will be comprised of 8th, 7th and 6th grade girls who will combine to play a competitive schedule, yet continue to work on the development of stick skills, field sense and game awareness.
- <span class="style7"> (Ms. Goeller, Ms. Ralston) more experienced 8th & 9th grade girls.
*We will let the students know which team they will be on by Spring Break (if possible). Extra varsity practices will start after teams have been determined.
Uniforms and Equipment
Boys and Girls: All boys and girls are required to wear appropriate practice uniform. Each teams coach will instruct their team what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. If you do not already have a uniform from the fall season, or if you have lost or outgrown your uniform, a new one may be purchased from the Athletic Office. The approximate cost of a uniform is $60; you will be billed for purchases made through the Athletic Office. Practice uniforms and sweats will be distributed during the first few days of practice. The School provides game uniforms for all sports. Students are responsible for keeping practice and game uniforms clean during the season. Please follow washing instructions on the uniform tags to avoid any damage or shrinkage. Students will be billed for lost or damaged game uniforms.
The girls are required to have a lacrosse stick (wooden or molded head), a mouth guard, and cleats. (Please be aware that there is a difference between girls and boy's lacrosse sticks). All girls participating must wear protective eyewear. The US Lacrosse Women's Board of Governors has mandated this and there are no exceptions. The recommended eyewear can be purchased at Kelly's sports, as well as through specialized lacrosse stores. The boys are required to have a lacrosse stick, shoulder pads, arm pads, gloves, mouth guard, athletic cup, cleats and a helmet. In order to make our teams look more uniform, we ask anyone who is buying a new helmet to buy a black one. It is okay to use another color if you already have a helmet. We recommend "Cascade" style helmets. It is the parents' responsibility to maintain the helmet (check for loose screws and worn padding, etc.) throughout the season. If a coach deems the helmet is not in acceptable condition, the student will not be permitted to participate in any practice or game. Mouth guards may be purchased in the bookstore for $2.00.
The above-mentioned equipment can be found at most local sporting goods stores. Lacrosse International in Downingtown and Kelly's Sports in West Chester offer 10% discounts on sports equipment to Upland families. Lacrosse International in Downingtown carries the largest inventory of all lacrosse equipment. The Sports Authority in Wilmington, (across from Concord Mall), also carries lacrosse equipment.
Special Events
There will be two special events for the boys' and girls' varsity teams. The first will be a home tournament on Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25. The Valley School from Ligonier, PA will visit us that weekend for reciprocal home stays. As many of you remember, we visited the Valley School in October for a Field Hockey and Soccer Tournament. We will need volunteers to help with housing for the boys' and the girls' teams that weekend. If you can house someone please let me know. The second event will be an away trip to Greenwich Country Day School in Connecticut. This year the teams will leave on Friday, May 1 and will return Saturday evening May 2. Details will be forthcoming.
This year both girls' lacrosse teams will get the opportunity to be part of a special exchange program with a touring English girls school. The visiting teams will arrive on Sunday March 29th (last day of break), will be hosted for two nights by Upland families, have 2 games vs. Upland on Monday March 30th, and leave for the rest of their trip Tuesday March 31st. We will need to host 34 girls and their four coaches for those two nights.
